At 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, the Elmen Center will host the annual triathlon. Participants will swim half of a mile, bike 15 miles and run 4 miles to compete for the first place prize of a $100 Best Buy gift card. The event is sponsored by Augustana Recreational Services.
“It’s a celebration of everything we’ve done and kind of what we’re all about,” director of Recreational Services Carmen Hecht said.
Additionally, Augustana students can earn points for their Dog Eat Dog (DED) teams, a year-long competition in which teams of floormates or housemates rack up points based on participation in Recreational Services events. For every person that participates in the triathlon, DED teams earn from 10 to 15 points.
“The triathlon can really hold a lot of weight for the Dog Eat Dog teams based on participation,” Hecht said.
Participants in the triathlon range from students to faculty to alumni. The event brings together a wide range of people, according to Hecht.
Individuals can choose to do the entire triathlon by themselves, or teams of as many as three can each take one leg of the race.
Sophomore Brianna Sejnoha has been preparing all year to complete the triathlon as an individual with her boyfriend, also competing as an individual.
“I am most excited to cross the finish line,” she said. “I cannot wait to see my hard work pay off.”
