0-4: Augustana wrestling’s record against ranked opponents this season.  The Vikings, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II rankings Jan. 29, fell to no. 6 Upper Iowa last Friday night in the NSIC conference showdown.

Augie’s TJ North (25-7) started the match with a 6-2 win over Chris Paulus (22-12) at 125 pounds, but the success did not last long.

“Being the first match, I was the one to set the tone for the night, so with a win I felt pretty good.  I thought we could definitely win the dual but knew it was going to be a battle,” North said.

Trevor Franklin (10-4) of Upper Iowa handled Augie’s 133 pound Jeremiah Peterson (15-10) to tie the match at 3-3.  Upper Iowa took a lead in the meet at 141 pounds when Matt Paulus (21-19) won a decision over Brandon Charbonneau (28-7).

Senior leader Nate Herda (23-4) defeated Jordan Rinken (28-9) in overtime in the 149 pound class.  Augustana head coach Jason Reitmeier honored his seniors, Nate Herda and Brian Schultz, prior to the match.  The duo recorded two of the three contested wins.

“[Our seniors] have been pillars for this team all year and since they came to Augie,” Reitmeier said.  He called their wins “very satisfying.”

Things took a turn for the worst after the Herda-Rinken match. Sophomore Zach Friederich (141: 9-12) fell in the 157 pound slot to Bryce Lumzy (27-9) in a fast 53 seconds.  Freidrich wrestled two weights above his normal class because of an injury to normal 157-pounder Shawn Hatlestad.  Reitmeier noted he was the “best option” for the match.

Augie’s Parker Swanson (11-15) battled Wade Gobin (30-10) to the end of the match, yet Gobin came out with the 5-4 decision at 165 pounds.

The Peacock success continued into the upper weights with decision-wins of Blake Sorensen (29-10) over Jeff Nielsen (14-9) at 174  pounds, followed by Mitch Schultz (10-3) over Sean Derry (13-10) in the 184 pound class.

Upper Iowa waived the 197 pounds  contest against Jayd Docken (14-4) instead of wrestling with Carl Broghammer (34-2) with the Upper Iowa dual victory already determined.

In the heavyweights, senior Brian Schultz (5-5) defeated Jeremy Brazil (18-17) in a 3-2 bout, but the decision wasn’t enough to lift Augustana over Upper Iowa.  The 21-15 loss snapped Augie’s two-match win streak, moving the Vikings to 9-6 on the year, falling to 4-3 in NSIC conference.  Upper Iowa improves to 10-3 (6-1).

The Vikings wrestled Wednesday against Minnnesota State Moorhead following the press of the Mirror.  The Augustana Open tournament for Feb. 16 has been cancelled.  Augustana will wrestle in the northern regional qualifying tournament on Feb. 24 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
